One of the complicated parts of a traumatic brain injury is that the symptoms can vary greatly from one person to the next. These injuries are often unique in every case, depending on severity, location and a variety of other factors.
That said, there are some common symptoms to watch out for. If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident or something similar, it is wise to know what signs may indicate that you have a TBI.
Cognitive symptoms
To begin with, some symptoms are cognitive or behavioral in nature. You may have trouble sleeping or sleep too much, and you might feel excessive fatigue. You may experience mood swings or begin feeling depressed. You may find yourself dealing with extreme anxiety. Memory issues are also common—many people do not remember the accident itself.
Physical symptoms
Additionally, you may be facing physical symptoms such as trouble balancing, loss of fine motor skills or a persistent feeling of dizziness. You could have a headache or experience nausea and vomiting. Many people also struggle with speech problems or difficulty finding the right words.
Sensory symptoms
In terms of sensory symptoms, your senses may feel diminished—for example, blurred vision or a strange taste in your mouth. On the other hand, you could become overstimulated, such as experiencing a ringing in your ears or excessive sensitivity to sound or light. This can make social situations difficult.
Seeking compensation
If you have suffered a traumatic brain injury in an accident caused by someone else, you may be able to seek significant financial compensation for medical bills, lost wages and more.
