How the color of your car keeps you safe

The next time you buy a new car, it is important to think about the color. This goes beyond merely a stylistic choice or an aesthetic preference. The color of your vehicle can help to keep you safe.

For instance, some studies have found that drivers who have white vehicles are 12% less likely to get into car accidents. This is simply because a brightly colored car stands out against the pavement. Dark gray is one of the most popular colors for vehicles, along with black. Both of those are going to blend into the road, especially in low-lighting conditions.

It’s not just white cars that are safer, but any car with a light color. Studies also found that beige was safer, for instance, along with yellow. Many emergency vehicles are painted in fluorescent lime yellow these days – a shift away from the traditional red – because it stands out the most to the human eye.

Human error causes most car accidents

You may be surprised that something as simple as color can affect accident probabilities. But the key thing to remember is that the majority of crashes are caused by human error. Anything you can do to keep other drivers from making fundamental mistakes – like failing to yield the right of way – lowers your accident odds.

In this sense, the color of the car can certainly play a big role. Say a driver is waiting to turn and they just glance to see if the road is clear. They should take more time to really check their surroundings, but many drivers are in a rush or distracted by their phones. If your car stands out, they’re more likely to see it, even with just a quick glance.

Of course, you could still get injured in an accident. If so, be sure you know how to seek financial compensation.
