What testing is necessary for naturalized citizenship?

On Behalf of | Jun 5, 2024 | Immigration

Becoming a citizen can be a lengthy process. People often need to stay in the United States for years to be eligible for citizenship. They also have to complete the standard naturalization process.

That process involves paying a fee, filing paperwork, undergoing a background check and attending an in-depth interview. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) very carefully screens those seeking to remain in the country permanently. Immigrants must answer questions about themselves during the interview.

The naturalization interview also involves two tests that an immigrant must pass to become a citizen. What are the testing requirements?

An English language test

Proving proficiency in English is a key element of the naturalization effort. The test involves speaking with the test administrator to prove verbal communication skills and listening comprehension.

Immigrants must demonstrate an ability to read and write in English as well. The USCIS does provide a vocabulary study guide to help people prepare for the test.

A Civics test

Civics testing looks at someone’s knowledge of government and history in the United States. The USCIS provides a list of 100 potential questions for people to study.

Aspiring immigrants generally have to answer 10 questions during the naturalization interview. They have to get at least six of the 10 questions right to pass the test.  Those who fail the test can retake it once. If they fail a second time, they must begin the naturalization process over again.

Understanding the testing requirements might help people feel less anxious about the naturalization process. Those who prepare properly can increase their chances of passing the mandatory tests.
